| The unique CFL LED colour-change floodlight from the Light Projects Group is lighting the famous
domes at Whiteleys Shopping Centre in London’s Bayswater.
From original concept by Spiers and Major, Lighting Architects Group and with design development by
consultants Rybka, the Whiteleys application is the first in the world to use these innovative new
266 x 152mm floodlights which use combinations of red, green and blue LEDs to produce virtually any
colour.
This gives the centre an ever-changing lighting scene that requires minimum maintenance and allows
the Centre to tailor their lighting to different events or themes.
The structure of each dome at Whiteleys consists of an inner layer, constructed of steel frames holding
opaque plastic panels which is viewed from the underside inside the Mall areas, and an outer layer which
uses Georgian wire glass and can be viewed from neighbouring high spots.
The LED floodlights are located in the maintenance space between the inner and outer layers of each
dome. The inner dome is colour saturated from behind using a ‘Grazing’ technique so that the outer
dome glows as a result of the reflection from the internal surfaces.
The view from both above and below the domes is a powerful, saturated colour, creating a focal point
of the shopping centre, which can be viewed from the London Eye and the flight path to Heathrow. |
